Instagram DM Scripts That Book Clients (Without Being Weird)
Warm DM scripts for freelancers and coaches: compliment → context → soft ask. Includes follow-ups and what never to send.
Cold DMs fail for the same reason cold email fails: you make it about you too fast. Warm DMs work when you’ve earned a tiny bit of attention first.
Before you DM
- Engage 2–3 times (thoughtful comment, not emoji spam)
- Mention something specific from their page/Reel
- Offer a small observation — not a 4-paragraph pitch
Script 1: Compliment → insight → ask
“Hey {{name}} — your Reel on {{topic}} was sharp, especially the point about {{detail}}.
I help {{audience}} with {{outcome}}. If useful, I can send a 3-line audit of your {{bio/funnel/content}} — want it?”
Script 2: Mutual niche
“Saw you’re building {{offer}} for {{audience}}. I’ve been testing {{tactic}} for similar accounts — got one idea that might help your {{metric}}. Open to a quick note?”
Script 3: After they engage with you
“Thanks for the save/comment on my {{post}}. Since you’re into {{topic}}, curious — are you trying to grow {{goal}} or book more {{clients/calls}} right now?”
Soft follow-ups (wait 4–7 days)
- “Totally fine if timing’s off — want me to send the 3-line audit anyway?”
- “Closing my notes on {{topic}} this week — still useful?”
Never send
- “I can get you 10k followers”
- Links in the first message
- Voice notes pitching for 90 seconds
- Copy-paste with the wrong name
Turn DMs into calls
Once they say yes to value:
- Send the mini-audit
- Ask one qualifying question
- Offer 2 time slots (not “whenever”)

How many DMs per day?
Quality over volume. 10 personalized beats 50 spam.
Can I use AI to write DMs?
Yes for drafts — then rewrite so it sounds like you noticed something real on their profile.
